They will create their own thread in material as they are driven in, using the screws' threads to do so as they lack a drill bit end. A self-tapping screw works best in softer base material such as wood or sheet metal, which is often the base material for installation of drywall. Avoid overdriving the screw as it can cause damage to the drywall creating a dimpled surface which would require additional corrective work.
