External Tooth Lock Washers

External lock washers are also called external-tooth lock washers for their distinctive circular shape and ‘teeth’ facing outward. The lock washer’s teeth are designed to bite into the fastener for grip creating the locking feature as the fastener is tightened during installation. External lock washers provide mid-level resistance to loosening from vibrations, torque or other forces. During installation, it’s important that the user be sure to adhere to the suggested torque specifications as overtightening the connection may compromise the external lock washer and reduce its effectiveness. Another consideration to be mindful of is the increased potential damage to the surface material by the teeth.
