Internal lock washers are also called internal-tooth lock washers for their distinctive circular shape and ‘teeth’ facing the middle of the circle. The lock washer’s teeth are designed to bite into the fastener for grip creating the locking feature as the fastener is tightened during installation. An internal lock washer provides mid-level vibration resistance with the improved grip offered by the inward facing teeth. During installation, it’s important that the user be sure to adhere to the suggested torque specifications as overtightening the connection may compromise the internal lock washer and reduce its effectiveness. Another consideration to be mindful of is the increased potential damage to the surface material by the teeth.
